Are you happy when you hit your financial goals?

Many people: Once I hit a certain level of net worth all of my problems will magically vanish.”

Reality: ”Nope!”

Facepalmed by the Backfire Effect

What if I told you that achieving that long-term net worth goal you’ve always dreamed of achieving probably won’t bring the happiness you expect?

That letdown is a surprising reality many people, especially high achievers, experience. Often, upon reaching the summit of their financial aspirations, you barely pause to admire the view before plotting your next climb.

Most of what makes you happy in life has nothing to do with money … realizing that once you have money can be a painful admission.

Happiness is complicated, but if you simplify it into things like a loving family, health, friendship, seven hours of sleep, and being part of something bigger than yourself, you realize how limited money’s role can be.

It’s not that it has no role; just smaller than you may have assumed.

I think what many people really want from money is the ability to stop thinking about money. To have enough money that they can stop thinking about it and focus on other stuff.

It’s this weird relationship: They become obsessed with making money with the hope that someday they can ignore it altogether.

The Problem: Refusing to recognize that you’ve met your goal can be as bad as never meeting the goal.

Lifestyle creep causes you to spend more and more to keep up.

Since there are always going to be people richer than you, it’s difficult to feel wealthy even when you are.

But when your main frame of reference is other rich people trying to impress each other, that gap can close quickly … when you exit that comparison game.

Money does matter – but It also matters how you think about it, why you want it, and what you spend it on.

The end object of wealth ought to be serenity.
